The River and the City

Contemporary Flows. Fluid Times

Rivers have been dammed, polluted, deepened, channelized, controlled, and have had their course changed, to make them be more useful in the service of some. Often this requires massive capital and technology, infrastructure and resources to make rivers ‘behave.’ It is not surprising that can only be undertaken by those who posses this power. The first channelization of the river Yamuna was carried out by a Mogul emperor, while only the Hamburg harbor authority can hope to deepen the river Elbe. Such interventions, may have desired results, at least for some time, but what really changes in the ecological web is never really fully known or understood completely. Alongside changes as predicted by climate change, have resulted in a new set of uncertainties.
